The importance of learning through Play Children learn both non-verbal and verbal skills through playing with toys. Children need to develop a number of perceptual skills in each of these areas in order to lay the foundations for academic learning. Perception is the interpretation of visual or auditory information that is processed in the brain, which is received through the senses – the eyes, ears and skin (including the skin of the mouth!). Very young children will instinctively put toys in their mouth to learn more about what they are feeling.
