Sandile Zungu
BSc Mech Eng, MBA (UCT)
Sandile Zungu (‘’Zungu’’) was born in Umlazi Township, Durban on the 10th of February 1967. He attended Hilton College and completed his post-matric in 1984. The values instilled during his time at Hilton College are deep rooted and Zungu continues to subscribe to them, ‘’courage, respect, humility, compassion, honesty and accountability with integrity in all we do’’.
In 1988 Zungu completed a BSc (Mechanical Engineering) degree at the University of Cape Town (UCT), followed by his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at the UCT Graduate School of Business in 1995. In 2000 he completed a Program for Global Leadership certificate at the Harvard Business School in Boston, USA. Zungu continues to broaden his knowledge and believes education is key to success.
For Zungu time does not stand still and he is ever progressing. He is considered an entrepreneur at heart and thrives on the chase of a new investment. In 2002, Zungu Investments company (Zico) was established. Zico is a formidable diversified industrial holdings organisation with interests that include education, manufacturing, property, sport, forensics, gaming and resources.
Zungu believes in inspiring transformation, through business empowerment. Investments are the key to economic advancement and sustainability. As a dedicated leader, unwilling to compromise on the aspirations of inclusive growth and equal economic participation. Zungu has become a definitive voice within South African business in general.
Zungu is a hardworking and passionate individual, he is an avid sports fan and owner of the Amazulu Football club.
He subscribes to the philosophy, HARD WORK PAYS ITS DUES AND INTEGRITY SUSTAINS GAINS.
Nomkhita Mona
MBA, MHRM/LR, Honours (Industrial Relations), BA (Psychology & Sociology), Rhodes University, Nelson Mandela University
With extensive executive leadership under her belt, Nomkhita is a seasoned CEO and transformational leader who has made a powerful impact across diverse sectors — from logistics and forestry to public enterprises and economic development.
She currently serves as CEO of Shuter & Shooter Publishers, where she is steering the organisation into a new era marked by digital innovation and sustainable growth.
She has held various CEO positions across both the private and public sectors. Two of these were Group CEO positions in national SOCs.
She was a member of the Eastern Cape Planning Commission. She has also been the Chairperson and member of various Boards.
Nomkhita is widely respected for her strategic vision, ethical leadership, and operational excellence. Her ability to lead complex organisations, deliver operational turnarounds, and navigate stakeholder relationships with integrity has made her a standout force in boardrooms and beyond.
She holds an MBA from Rhodes University. She also holds a Master's degree in Labour Relations and Human Resources, an Honours in Industrial Relations, as well as a BA (Psychology & Sociology) from the University of Port Elizabeth (now Nelson Mandela University)
John Eglington
CA (SA), University of KwaZulu-Natal
John Eglington qualified as a Chartered Account with PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2000, before joining Ernst & Young in London. After returning to South Africa in 2006, John spent a further year with PricewaterhouseCoopers before venturing into commerce and joining Shuter & Shooter Publishers in August 2007.
John has a wealth of experience in internal controls, financial and operational management, and is responsible for the full financial, administration and company secretarial functions. John is also particularly focused on the operational and strategic aspects of the business, leveraging his experience to provide sound support to all business functions.
John has invested a significant amount of time in ensuring that the Company retains its Level 1 BBBEE rating in terms of the Revised Codes of Good Practice. John currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Publishers Association of South Africa (PASA) in the capacity of Treasurer.
Warren Kliphuis
MBA, Gordan Institute of Business Science(GIBS)
Warren Kliphuis oversees all of Shuter & Shooter Publishers’ product development and marketing. He has over 15 years’ experience within the educational publishing sector and has a Masters in Business Administration degree (MBA) from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). Warren spent over 10 years with global education companies before joining Shuter & Shooter Publishers in 2016.
Warren has a deep understanding of the South African education market, both from a publishing and marketing perspective, and has vast experience in planning and running promotional campaigns to the country’s 26 000 schools.
From 2013 to 2019 Warren served in various roles for the Publishers’ Association of South Africa (PASA), and he represented this body at the Department of Basic Education’s Learner and Teacher Support Materials (LTSM) forum meetings.
Bathabile Phofu
CA (SA), GMP Harvard Business School
Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Bathabile Phofu is the Group Chief Financial Officer at Zungu Investments Company where she leads the financial strategy, capital management, and governance functions of one of South Africa’s most respected investment groups. With a career spanning investment management and banking, she brings a distinctive blend of technical expertise, strategic insight, and purpose driven leadership to the organization.
Bathabile’s professional journey reflects deep experience in financial structuring, capital allocation, and portfolio growth across diverse sectors. At Zungu Investments, she plays a central role in shaping investment decisions, optimizing performance across the group’s portfolio companies, and ensuring long term value creation. Her disciplined approach to financial leadership is matched by her ability to align commercial success with ethical stewardship and transformation.
Prior to joining Zungu Investments, Bathabile held roles in banking and manufacturing. Her experience has equipped her with a holistic understanding of both the operational and strategic levers that drive sustainable business growth.
Beyond her financial leadership, Bathabile is deeply committed to transformation, mentorship, and inclusive leadership in South Africa’s corporate landscape.
